MPOB/DONGWHA COLLABORATION

The purpose of the Project is to carry out research, development and successfully commercial production of MDF from oil palm biomass at Dongwha Plants. MPOB has basic technology and vast imformation on Palm oil biomass such as the oil palm trunk (OPT), oil palm fronds (OPF) and the empty fruit bunches (EFB). Dongwha Malaysia has three MDF plants in Malaysia; in Nilai, Kulim and Merbok with the total capacity of MDF production of 1700 m3/day. With the depleting supply of original raw materials such as the rubberwood and mixed tropical wood, the use of oil palm biomass could cater the raw material supply problems.

The pilot and commercial plant studies for the production of MDF using OPT were completed in 2011 and Dongwha Malaysia has announced and launched the commercialization of MDF in their plants during the PIPOC 2011. The study was continued in using the OPF and EFB and it was completed in 2014.
