Phenolic Pilot Plant

     

       Within POMTEC, is a pilot plant which produces phenolic antioxidants from POME. The antioxidants comprise flavonoids, polyphenols and phenolic acid, and water-soluble vitamins and organic acids. These antioxidant products have wide application in the nutraceutical, cosmeceutical and food industries.

 

 

         Built at a cost of RM4.69 million, this pilot plant, through a novel process (US patent No. 7, 387, 802 and PI 9804378) is able to recover valuable phenolic antioxidants from the water soluble fraction of oil palm waste discarded during the milling process. The palm oil industries generates about 35 million tonnes of this wastewater per year. The invention reduces environmental pollution for human consumption. This is in line with the zero-waste concept being adopted by the industry.
